Animal Health Status

Australia has implemented many proactive control measures in order to remain free of many livestock diseases that plague many countries such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), scrapie (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies) and foot and mouth disease. Reports on Australia’s animal health status are published Safemeat Annual Report 06-07, and are also provided to the World Organization for Animal Health  (OIE).

Foot and Mouth Disease

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) affects cloven-hoofed animals, such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, deer and buffalo. The symptoms of the disease include fever, excessive salivation, and as its name suggests, blisters in the mouth and on the feet. more

Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies

TSEs in animals are a class of rare brain diseases that are associated with the accumulation of abnormal prion protein in the brain. TSEs are incurable central nervous system illnesses that have been detected in a number of species, including humans. Australia is free of all animal TSEs. more
