Level 1 LPA (food safety)

The Level 1 certification is required for producers to use a National Vendor Declaration for cattle, sheep and lambs, and goats.

LPA guidelines present producers with very basic animal production and record keeping requirements designed to ensure the production of safe food. Independent audits are conducted to ensure the program’s integrity is maintained. A sanctions policy is also in place. LPA consists of two levels of certification.

The five elements of LPA – Level 1 are:

  • Property risk assessment
  • Safe and responsible animal treatments
  • Fodder crop, grain and pasture treatments and stock foods
  • Preparation for dispatch of livestock
  • Livestock transactions and movements

The Level 1 certification is required for producers to use a National Vendor Declaration for cattle, sheep and lambs, and goats.

The National Vendor Declaration

The NVD ensures that the livestock vendor is responsible for declaring any potential risks to food safety. State legislation underpins the NVD, thus producers who provide false or misleading information on NVD forms face prosecution and substantial fines. more

Commodity Vendor Declaration

A Commodity Vendor Declaration (CVD) can be obtained by a producer or feedlot when purchasing any feed for their animals. In the CVD, a supplier must declare if any chemicals were used to produce the feed. more

Export Slaughter Intervals and Withholding Periods

Occasionally, livestock producers may treat animals with approved medications or treat pastures with approved chemicals. In order to prevent any risk to trade Australia has an Export Slaughter Interval (ESI) program in place. more
