In recent years, the ability to trace product back to its origins has been increasingly sought by customers around the world. Traceability may be considered a current issue however in Australia, livestock traceability has been in existence for over 40 years.

Property Identification Code (PIC) and tailtag system

Since the 1960s, a mandatory tagging system, known as the Property Identification Code (PIC)-tailtag system has been used throughout Australia based on a unique identification number assigned to each farm or parcel of land. The basis of Australia’s livestock traceability system is this PIC, which underpins Australia’s NVD and the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) programs. more

National Vendor Declaration and Waybill (NVD)

National Vendor Declarations (NVDs) provide a mechanism for the transfer of information on the history of livestock consigned for sale or slaughter and allows producers to declare the residue status of their livestock, among other things. more

National Livestock Identification System

The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is Australia’s system for the identification and tracing of cattle and lambs/sheep. It is a permanent whole-of-life identification system that enables individual animals to be tracked from property of birth to slaughter for food safety, product integrity and market access purposes. more

National Feedlot Accreditation Scheme (NFAS)

All grainfed cattle in Australia destined for export markets are required by the National Feedlot Accreditation Scheme to be individually identified with a permanent unique identification number when they enter a feedlot. more

National Saleyard Quality Assurance program (NSQA)

Under the National Saleyard Quality Assurance program, stock identification procedures are in place to ensure that full stock traceability is maintained throughout the saleyard process. more

EAN numbering/DNA sampling

Some producers in Australia utilise EAN  technology to maintain livestock identification. In this instance, each individual animal is assigned a unique EAN compliant number based on the Property Identification Code and a sequence number.  This number is applied to the animal via an eartag. more
