EAN numbering/DNA sampling

Some producers in Australia utilise EAN  technology to maintain livestock identification. In this instance, each individual animal is assigned a unique EAN compliant number based on the Property Identification Code and a sequence number.  This number is applied to the animal via an eartag.  Where an NLIS tag has been used, the NLIS number is linked to the unique number. DNA hair samples can be collected and recorded against the unique animal number.

When livestock are transported to another property or are sold, a National Vendor Declaration is prepared. This NVD can be sent electronically using EANCOM messaging. The message contains all the necessary NVD information as well as the unique tag number and NLIS number. The receiver of the livestock can send back producer feedback by use of EANCOM messaging. The collection of DNA samples is voluntary.
