National Livestock Identification System (NLIS)

The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is Australia’s system for the identification and tracing of cattle and lambs/sheep. It is a permanent whole-of-life identification system that enables individual animals to be tracked from property of birth to slaughter for food safety, product integrity and market access purposes.

Cattle

Under the system, cattle permanently carry a device that is embedded with a radio frequency microchip. The NLIS radio frequency chip can be read at abattoirs, saleyards and on-farm. more

Sheep and Lambs

The Australian sheep industry is also involved with the NLIS. The identification scheme involves sheep being identified with a whole-of-life eartag containing a Property Identification Code (PIC) indicating the property of birth. Property movements can be traced through the NVD system. more
